YORK Knavesmire Harriers athletic club’s new recruit Rose Mather has hit the ground running.

At the 23-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Race, Mather was the first lady to finish in Horton - and went one better than her mother, who was the second-placed lady in 1984.

There was plenty to celebrate for the club at large on the course as a Knavesmire runner was the first lady to each of the three peaks.

Josie Rawes was the first woman to the top of Pen-y-ghent, with Mather then moving up the field to be first to the remaining tops of Whernside and Ingleborough .

Mather finished in a time of three hours 47 minutes 38 seconds (51st overall), with Rawes finishing as fifth lady in 4.04:04 (83rd overall).

Also running for Knavesmire were Hem Rana (4.18:27) and Orna O’Toole (4.53:17).

At the Kilham Multi-Terrain 10k, York Knavesmire Harriers scored more success.

Helen Cross was the first lady back, and ninth overall, with a time of 39 minutes 11 seconds.

Team-mate Rebecca Sizer was second lady with a time of 46:29 and Pauline Foot was first in the FV55 age category.

Rawe and Cross were also in action the previous weekend. Together with Becky Penty and Nik Tarrega, they were part of the Mire ladies’ victorious Senior Ladies team at the first race of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League.

The YKH women were the class of the field with Penty first, Cross second, Rawe third and Tarrega fourth.

Meanwhile, City of York athletic club’s senior teams took part in the National Road Relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham.

The women’s team built on their fine performance in the Northern Championships to finish in 20th place, with Katy Wood, Emma Ballantyne, Isabel O’Brien and Charlotte Mason all contributing.

The men finished just inside the top 50 after strong work from Angus McMillan, Joe O’Brien, Alex Dickinson, Tommy Shaw, Ben Thompson and Steve Asquith.
