ALEX COCKRAM’S hat-trick was not enough for City of York Hockey Club Men I as they fell to a 4-3 defeat at Brigg in Yorkshire & North East League premier division.

After conceding early, York were always chasing the game but made a real go of it after being 4-1 down in the second half.

The defeat leaves York eighth in the table.

York heads and focus seemed to drop when the opener went in, and this was soon followed by the hosts’ second.

Around the 20-minute mark, Tom Feasby followed up a well-timed tackle in the centre of the pitch by breaking down the right and delivering the ball across goal for Cockram to net at the back post.

Brigg extended their advantage with two goals early in the second half but York this time kept on task.

From a short corner, Cockram - after a one-two on the edge of the ‘D’ - dispatched his second and added his third from another such set piece with a drag flick.

Acomb Men I went sixth in Yorkshire & North East League division one moor & dale with a 6-0 win over Halifax II.

Halifax had won their previous two but were met by a strong Tangerines outfit, who leapfrogged their now eighth-placed opponents with the win.

Acomb started put the visitors on the back foot early on and were rewarded with an opening strike by Jonny Brown after 10 minutes.

Halfway into the first period, Acomb doubled their advantage when Brown found himself in the right place and netted after good work by Tom Brown and James Saunderson.

The second half was a high-scoring end-to-end tussle. John Forecast sped clean through through the visitors’ wide-open defence and his fierce strike found the back board.

Brown netted with a neat lifted ball over the keeper from close range and this was followed a minute later when Forecast swept in for the Tangerines’ fifth.

Halifax pressed forward to reduce their deficit but were thwarted by several fine saves by Craig Brown.

A lob from Stuart Baxter failed to be cut out and Forecast ran on to the ball and shot past the keeper for his hat-trick.

Forecast had a further chance but the ball netted off his body while Saunderson had a shot well saved as Acomb’s front line - ably supported by Neil Hutchins, Rob Ireland, Jamie Robinson and Nick Linfoot - had a field day.
