YORK City Knights' proposed rearranged trip to Sheffield Eagles in the Betfred Championship will not go ahead.

York were initially set to visit Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium to face Sheffield last month, but the game was postponed due to multiple coronavirus cases in the squad of the South Yorkshire squad.

Knights head coach James Ford had previously stated that he had been given a new date for the game, but it now understood that the fixture will not go ahead.

Discussions between the two clubs and the Rugby Football League (RFL) had taken place about playing the game this weekend, but a decision has now been taken to draw a line under the regular season matches.

The news means that York have finished ninth in the Betfred Championship after playing 20 matches, winning nine and losing 11.

Had the Knights been able to play Sheffield and won, they would have placed above Widnes Vikings in eighth, who have played one additional match.

York last played away to Sheffield in March's Betfred Challenge Cup win.
