YORK City Rowing Club "could not be more proud" of the three crews who represented the Minster city outfit at Henley Royal Regatta.

At the annual rowing competition in Oxfordshire on August 11 and 12, the junior boys and a composite crew all impressed with their performances on the water.

Also putting on "an incredible performance" were the junior girls, who had the added distinction of being the first women’s crew to qualify in the club’s history.

The junior boys quadruple sculls made it through the first day of heats of The Fawley Challenge Cup, beating The King’s School Worcester. They then went on to face The Windsor Boy’s School on Thursday, when they were beaten by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

The junior girls quadruple sculls were seeded through to the second day of racing on Thursday. It was there that they faced St. Edward’s School, who knocked them out of The Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup.

On the Thursday, the York City, Leeds RC and University of York Boat Club composite quadruple sculls faced Leander Club in The Prince of Wales Challenge Cup.

Against a high-calibre crew, they put on a strong performance but were beaten by two lengths.

A spokesperson for York City RC added: "The standard of racing at Henley Royal Regatta is extremely high, with clubs coming from all over the world to compete.

"To have three crews make it through to the second day is no easy feat.

"Congratulations to all athletes."
