YORK City have enjoyed a "great" pre-season, manager Steve Watson said following the Minstermen's 3-2 win at Notts County - barring the side's injury woes.

Kurt Willoughby netted a brace for City at the National League Magpies to ensure an unbeaten warm-up campaign after having trailed at half-time.

The former AFC Fylde marksman put York ahead before the hosts hit back through the outstanding Cal Roberts and a massively deflected Joel Taylor cross.

On-loan Harrogate Town striker Mark Beck headed York level in the second half after fantastic work from stand-in left-back Paddy McLaughlin and Willoughby sealed the win seven minutes from time after a delightful flick-on from Beck.

The only downside of the campaign thus far has been the number of injuries City have suffered. McLaughlin was in at left-back in the stead of Scott Barrow - whose recovery from an Achilles injury might take "months"- while Sam Fielding stepped into the centre-halves with Josh King out after he received a gashed leg against Sunderland.

Striker Jason Gilchrist has also not featured since the Sunderland game, while Matty Brown did not make the trip to Meadow Lane on Saturday.

The next time York step onto a playing field, it will be in National League North against Kidderminster Harriers this coming Saturday (3pm).

"It's been a really great pre-season," Watson said.

"We've been hit badly with injuries, unfortunately. We were without Scotty, Matty Brown and Gilchrist. Newts was having his first game back. Ducky actually came off feeling something.

"That's a bit concerning, certainly the Scotty Barrow one because we know that's going to be quite a while.

"Paddy stepped in today and did great. One thing you know about Paddy is he'll stick to his job and be diligent with his defensive duties and he got himself forward the way Scotty's been doing.

"Overall, we've got to be delighted with pre-season. We've got some terrific results against some terrific teams.

"But that will stand for nothing because all of this is aimed towards Kidderminster next week. We're all fully aware of what we need to be doing."
