YORK City goalkeeper Ryan Whitley has returned to Scarborough Athletic on loan.

Whitley was part of the Scarborough squad last season before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the season.

The 21-year-old has played in three of York's pre-season friendlies this summer, against Newcastle United, Sunderland and Ossett Town.

But he appears to remain behind first-choice keeper Pete Jameson ahead of the start of the Vanarama National League North season next week, with youngster Maison Campbell likely to serve as his understudy.

Whitley heads to Scarborough, who play a tier lower than York in the Pitching In Northern Premier League premier division, until January.

City have a 24-hour recall clause for the York-born keeper, who has also appeared for Whitby Town and South Shields on loan.

Scarborough manager Jonathan Greening, who had two spells with the Minstermen as a player, has an option to extend the loan until the end of the season.
