PRE-SEASON penalty hero Pete Jameson is pleased with the head of steam York City are building up - but is wary of getting too excited.

Shot-stopper Jameson has saved two spot kicks during the last two games of pre-season, ensuring the Minstermen beat Middlesbrough 2-1 and drew 1-1 against Sunderland.

Thanks to these saves, then, York are unbeaten in their opening four warm-up fixtures ahead of the 2021/22 National League North season. Of the three wins under their belts, two have come against Championship side Middlesbrough and Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

“It’s great to get big clubs like these down, and for fans to see players of that calibre,” Jameson said after the Boro victory, which was sealed by first-half goals from Mackenzie Heaney and Mark Beck.

“We don’t want to get too carried away but it’s a great start to pre-season. It’s good to have a strong start and we’ll take that into August 14.

“What we’re doing on and off the pitch, it’s good to see that coming together and working.

“It was a strong performance,” he added of the Middlesbrough game.

“We know they’re a strong side and they’ll keep the ball in spells but I thought we did really well in dealing with them and with our game plan when we had the ball.”

Boro had taken the lead early on with a well-placed curving header from Dael Fry, and could have earned a draw from 12 yards after Uche Ikpeazu was felled in the box.

Jameson, though, was equal to Paddy McNair’s effort, just as he was with Benji Kimpioka six days previously.

“I don’t think I’ve saved one prior to this and now I’ve saved two on the bounce. It’s brilliant, personally,” Jameson said.

“On the whole, I’m just chuffed that as a team we’re getting good results. That’s the main thing.”

City travel to Ossett United next Tuesday for a 7pm kick off.
