TWO City of York Athletics Club juniors secured first-placed finishes in the English Schools' Athletics Association (ESAA) Combined Events regional round.

Athletes from around Yorkshire and the North East were in competition at Hull's Costello Stadium, including nine juniors from City of York AC.

In the junior girls competition, York's Esme Pounder finished top after scoring 3,057 points, which included two personal bests (PBs). That tally put her in sixth place in her category in the UK.

Kathryn Clague was a place behind her, on 2,827 points, and she also recorded a pair of PBs and secured a 10th place in the UK.

Ella Wright (ninth with 2,360 points), Imogen Barrett (eighth with 2,365), Sophie Robertson-Dover (seventh with 2,377) and Grace Green-Hemmings (sixth with 2,531) all also sealed top-10 finishes. All four posted at least two new personal-best times.

Louisa Birch placed just outside, in 11th, with a score of 2,180, though did seal three new PBs.

The North Yorkshire junior girls squad finished in first place and will represent the county at the National Finals in September.

Elsewhere, in the inter-girls heptathlon competition, Frances Hogg produced an excellent performance across the two days to win the competition comfortably.

She scored 4,678 points and produced four personal-best performances.

The inter-girls North Yorkshire squad also finished in first place and will represent the county at the National Finals in September.

In the inter-boys octathlon competition, Isaac Henson finished third with 3,828 points and produced six personal best performances from his eight events. It is hoped that he will now qualify for the national finals.

Meanwhile, in a Youth Development League upper event at the Gateshead International Stadium, City of York comfortably beat Gateshead Harriers 346-236 to remain at the top of the table.
