YORK City have made two additions to their forward line, with striker Clayton Donaldson returning to the club after 14 years away.

Joining the Jamaican international is Jason Gilchrist, who had a short and heavily punctuated loan spell last season. He arrives on a permanent deal from South Shields.

Donaldson, now 37 years old, scored more than 40 times for the Minstermen between 2005 and 2007, averaging just under a goal every two games.

After leaving York, he spent a season in Edinburgh with Hibs before spells with Crewe, Brentford, Birmingham, Sheffield United, Bolton and hometown club Bradford City, with whom he made 41 appearances in League Town last season.

“It feels brilliant to sign," Donaldson said. "It’s obviously been a while.

"I heard of the interest as soon as I left Bradford and to me it was a no-brainer. I was here before and I am thrilled to be back here.

“I always keep myself fit and in good shape, which is why I am still going.

"I love the sport, I love the game and my body says, 'You’ve definitely got another year or two in you'.

“Everyone wants to get promoted and I’m no different – it’s a team that definitely belongs higher and hopefully we can hit the ground running and look up rather than down.”

Gilchrist, who has had successful seasons at National League North level with FC United of Manchester and Southport, impressed at South Shields last season with six goals in nine games, as well as one against City in pre-season.

The 26-year-old said: “When the interest came in for the permanent move it was a no-brainer really.

"I came here and I felt like I fitted in straight away – I travel in with a couple of the lads who I get on really well with which makes a big difference.

“I’m no stranger to this level, I had really good years when I was at FC United and Southport and ended up finishing the top goalscorer in the league.

"My goal is to be the top goalscorer for the club and hopefully go and push to be the top goalscorer in the league.”
