YORK City are calling for volunteers to assist in the search for urns and caskets at Bootham Crescent.

As part of the club’s legacy project, City aim to relocate all urns from under and around the pitch to the memorial garden.

The search, to be overseen by Jason Wood of Historic England, will take place on June 14, 15 and 16.

City want the work completed before Persimmon Homes takes control of the site, in which the club’s legacy project will be constructed.

Stadium development director Ian McAndrew said: “We have to do it because they are relatives of our fans and as this is a very sensitive project we didn’t think it right to leave that to the developers.

“We are going to relocate them to the memorial area, so they are not leaving Bootham Crescent.”

The most common places for caskets to have been interred are outside the tunnel and the David Longhurst Stand goalmouth.

Anyone wishing to assist, or with knowledge of where urns may be laid, should email enquiries@yorkcityfootballclub.co.uk or phone 01904624447.
