WIGGINTON Grasshoppers finally lifted the Fastpack Ltd York Sunday Morning League Senior Challenge Trophy at the fourth time of asking with a 2-1 defeat of Thorpe United Red.

Thorpe started the game much the better side and it wasn't long before they were in front, Callum Petch turning the Wigginton defence inside out before blasting the ball into the roof of the net.

More chances followed for the Selby side with Grasshoppers struggling to get a foothold in the game and only a fantastic save from Wigginton goalkeeper Paul Wilson prevented them from increasing their lead before the break.

The second half was a very different affair, with Wigginton starting brightly.

James Edmond was dragged down inside the penalty area in the 55th minute and stepped up to take the spot-kick, only to see his effort superbly saved.

A minute later and Edmond made up for his miss, sliding the ball into the net following some magnificent skill from George Brown.

Wigginton were now on the front foot and were finally rewarded for their pressure 20 minutes from time when Brown again turned provider, setting up Jon Paul Vass to steer the ball home.

Meanwhile, the York Minster Engineering League Senior Cup final will be contested by old foes Huntington Rovers and Wigginton Grasshoppers on June 12.

Dunnington pulled a goal back via a penalty in the last minute but it proved too little too late.

Wigginton Grasshoppers, winners in 2015, completed a double over Strensall Tigers following their York FA Cup final defeat of their opponents a fortnight ago.
