WIGGINTON Grasshoppers lifted the York & District FA Senior Cup for the fourth time in their history following a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Strensall Tigers at New Earswick.

There were chances at both ends in the early minutes of the game with Harry Clapham going close for Grasshoppers and Danny Lamb sliding the ball the wrong side of the post for the Tigers.

Wiggy found the net in the seventh minute though, with Clapham sending the ball home at the second time of asking following a Neale Holmes corner.

A quarter of an hour later and a similar scenario occurred with Holmes teeing up Matt Tiplady, whose original headed attempt was parried before he found the net amid a goalmouth scramble.

The rest of the game played out without any further scoring, but both teams continued to create chances in a scrappy encounter.

Jamie Green hit the post and Gary Newton the bar as Hoppers looked to draw further clear, while Danny Lamb headed against the woodwork for Strensall.

Luke Quantock had a couple of further chances for Tigers, but they could not break down a resilient Wigginton defence as the Mill Lane side saw out the game to regain the cup they last won in 2018.
