YORK City Ladies took their first step towards defending their North Riding County FA Cup title with a quarter-final win over Boro Rangers.

Elisha Hardcastle and Rebecca Fevers struck early in each half to secure a 2-1 for the Minsterbelles, who are looking to lift the cup for the ninth time.

City won the cup for the eighth time in August last year after twice coming from behind to beat Redcar Town 4-2.

This quarter-final affair was a touch more straightforward. It took just seven minutes for Hardcastle to get on the scoresheet, finishing from a Caitlin Gough cross following Fevers' cross-field ball.

Just before the half-hour, Nikki Brown rattled the crossbar with a header from Fevers' ball in.

Nine minutes after the restart, Fevers hit the back of the net with a free kick from outside the area.

Laura Midgeley had the crossbar shaking again in the 62nd minute with a header from a corner before Boro Rangers pulled one back with seven minutes to go.
