A DOUBLE from Danny Nicholson saw York and District Under-13s Schoolboys defeat Barnsley 4-2.

York handed opportunities to a couple of new players, in Gabe Winfield and Finn Hodgson, due to injuries and both grasped with chance with both hands by putting in solid performances.

York got off to an excellent start and their tempo and desire kept Barnsley camped in their half for the first 10 minutes.

The early pressure told as the ball broke free to Todd Fella who slid a delightful ball down the left channel in to the penalty area for Ben Farrar.

The on-rushing goalkeeper was second to the ball as Farrar attempted to take the ball around the keeper but was brought down handing York a penalty which Farrar duly dispatched.

York doubled their lead when Winfield's shot from a corner ricocheted into the back of the net off a Barnsley player.

Nicholson came close to making it three when he struck the crossbar from a 20-yard free kick.

Barnsley began to find their feet thereafter and managed to reduce the deficit when York goalkeeper Oliver Huffer made a great save from a Barnsley strike but the ball rebounded in off a York defender and bobbled over the line.

The South Yorkshire club continued to dominate after the break but York withstood the pressure and managed to reassert their two-goal advantage.

Farrar whipped a ball in off the left for Nicholson to slot home from 10 yards out.

Barnsley fought back and York had to call upon keeper Oliver Smith to make some great stops to keep Barnsley out.

However, from a corner, the ball somehow found its way in to the net as it pin-balled around the six yard box.

But with five minutes remaining, York ensured that the victory was theirs when Nicholson broke clear in centre field around 30 yards out and, noticing the Barnsley goalkeeper off his line, hit a delightful left-footed shot over his head to seal the 4-2 victory.
