WIGGINTON Grasshoppers started their new-look Fastpack Ltd York Sunday Morning League campaign with a 4-3 win over Bishopthorpe.

Following the return of grassroots football, the Sunday Morning League has been divided into Senior and Junior Challenge Trophy mini-league competitions, with division one sides competing for the former and division two teams for the latter.

Group 'A' of the Senior Challenge Trophy opened with a fast-and-furious all-action tie as Hoppers edged feisty visitors Bishopthorpe.

The visitors started brightly and had the hosts on the ropes early in the game. Casey Stewart was brought down in the area and Ellis Stephenson stepped up to fire the spot kick past Josh Luckhurst in the Wiggy goal.

Minutes later and Stewart smashed in a second from just inside the area.

It took half an hour for Wigginton to create any sort of response - and when it came, it was direct from a corner, Neale Holmes curling the ball straight into the goal from the flag.

Four minutes later and James Edmond made it 2-2 going in to the break.

Wiggy controlled play better in the second period and Edmond hit a second to make it 3-2 to the hosts shortly before a now-rare Bishopthorpe attack levelled with 30 minutes to go.

Jon Paul Vass rifled home a decisive fourth goal for Wigginton to secure the points.

In the other group A fixture, Harry Wilson, Josh Wilson and Tom Parnaby fired Bramham to a 3-1 victory over Malt Shovel, leaving their side at the summit of the group after the first round of fixtures.

Haxby Town set the pace in group 'B' following a 5-1 success over 10-man Hounds. Paul Holmes (2), Dan Clipston, Jean Pierre Grenier and David Fell bagged for the Ethel Ward side with David Jackson providing Hounds' consolation.

Thorpe United won 4-1 over Hambleton, for whom Dan Smith scored a penalty.

In the Junior Challenge Trophy group 'A', Thorpe United Blue and K Town United drew 2-2. Nathan Sedman and Corey Littlefield scored for Thorpe with Seb Farren and Nathan Drake replying.

Pollington Predators beat neighbours FC Pollington 5-2 in group 'B'. Ryan Featherstone (2), Ryan Garbett (2) and Robert Tate fired the visitors to victory.

Walnut Tree beat visitors Burton Leonard 3-1 thanks to goals from Rob Forrester, Patryk Zimer and Joey McCormick.

Group 'C' saw a thriller with Clock House eventually triumphing 5-3 at Selby Olympia.

Wills Bar won 2-0 at FC Dracula.
