YORK City FC and York City Knights RLFC have passed on their condolences on learning of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip.
Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of Edinburgh passed away this morning at the age of 99.
City wrote on Twitter: "Everyone at York City FC is saddened to learn of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family."
The Knights tweeted: "Everyone at the Knights is saddened to learn of the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"Our thoughts and wishes are with Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family."
