FORMER York City star Ben Godfrey has been called up to the England Under-21 squad as part of a 23-man squad heading out to Slovenia for the U21 European Championships group stage (March 24 to 31).

The 23-year-old made 12 appearances for the Minstermen before moving to Norwich City in 2016 and has since caught the eye playing all across the defensive line this season for Premier League side Everton.

He has made 21 top-flight appearances so far this term and helped the Toffees to six clean sheets, including a 2-0 win over Merseyside rivals Liverpool - their first victory at Anfield since 1999.

There are 16 nations competing in the upcoming competition's group stage, from which four group winners and four runners-up will progress to the knock-out rounds (held from May 31 to June 6).

Joining Godfrey in the squad are current team-mate Tom Davies, 22, and former Norwich colleague Max Aarons, 21.

Players are considered eligible for England U21s if they were 21 or younger at the start of the calender year in which the two-year U21 Euros qualification campaign begins, so players can represent the side until the age of 23.
