FORMER York City star Peter Lorimer is in a hospice battling with a long term illness.

Lorimer, 74, is most famed as a club legend at Leeds United, featuring in Don Revie’s successful side of the 1970s.

A Leeds statement read: “Sadly we can confirm that Peter Lorimer is currently in a hospice battling a long term illness.

“Peter, his wife Sue and their family would like some privacy at this time, but also want to thank the Leeds United fans across the world for their wonderful messages of support.

“The club will update fans on Peter’s progress in due course.”

During his time at Elland Road, he won two league titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

After leaving Leeds for the first time, the Scotland international joined York City in 1979 after stints at Cape Town City and Toronto Blizzard.

He scored eight goals in 29 matches for the Minstermen before returning to Toronto in 1980.
