STEVE WATSON'S opposite number at Darlington Alun Armstrong has questioned whether Tuesday's fixture should go ahead.

The two managers are due to go head to head tomorrow evening (7.45pm), when York City are scheduled a National League North visit to the Quakers.

Darlington are riding high after a 4-1 FA Trophy victory over National League outfit Wealdstone on Saturday. The prize money for the fifth-round winners is £6,000.

"I look at Tuesday's game and wonder how can it go ahead when the league's in this state at this moment in time?" Armstrong told the club's YouTube channel on Saturday.

"My personal point of view is that the league should have just suspended for another week or two weeks until this vote is sorted rather than putting the onus on clubs to do it themselves. Clubs can't afford it at this moment in time.

"We got running costs from (the Trophy) game which help towards our running costs.

"Tuesday, you get nothing from it. It's going to be a difficult decision but you look at it and think, 'What's the point?' sometimes.

"We want to play, don't get me wrong, but I worry for other clubs in the league who can't afford it.

"What's the purpose in that? They could potentially go under for the sake of a year's sake time where you can run a proper competition and run it properly without any hindrance, any problems, and every club's still here.

"That's got to be the main thing rather than the short term."

Darlington have played just 11 National League North fixtures this season, the fewest in the division. York have played one more and have nine more points to show for their ventures.

With 31 league games for the full complement, plus at least one more Trophy game, Armstrong has also called for the season to be extended.

"Where are you going to fit them in? We've got no Tuesdays left," the former Blyth Spartans boss continued.

"The next Trophy game postpones the league game. Where are you going to fit that league game in?

"Play Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday? With part-time players? With all these Covid restrictions?

"It's nigh-on impossible.

"They've got to extend the season."
