What are the Types of Bets in Horse Racing?

York Press:

Unlike regular sports betting, if you want to wager on the ponies, you will have different types of bets to deal with. We will list most of the available bets in horse racing and give you some information about them.

Straight Wagers

These types of wagers are placed when you bet only on one horse during a race. They are very popular with beginners, and there are a few types of bets you can choose:

  • Win – this type of bet says that you are wagering that your horse will finish in the first place, and if that happens, you will get to collect the winnings.  Without any preparation, these types of bets only rely on luck, so it’s best read up on the horses and follow some of our betting tips.
  • Place – this type of bet says that you are wagering that your horse will finish in either first or second place. Usually, this type of bet has less payout potential than a "win" wager, but it's safer because you covered the top two places in the race.
  • Show – following the logic from the previous types of bets, when you are placing a "show" bet, you are wagering that your horse will finish in one of the top three spots. This means you will get to collect if the horse finishes in first, second, or third place. The payout potential is less than "win" and "place" bets.
  • Across the board – this type of bet is a combination of the previous three bet types. You are betting that your horse will "win," "place," and "show." This bet is also called a "combo straight wager."  It's more expensive to place this type of wager, but the payout potential is similar to the other bets.
  • Multiple straight wagers in a single bet – here you are making combinations of two bet types, for example, win/place or show/place. You win the payout depending on the place your horse finished. The stake for this type of bet is slightly higher than the regular straight wagers.

Exotic Wagers

These types of bets are placed when you want to bet on multiple horses during a single race. Like the previous category, there are a few bet types available here as well.

  • Quinella – with quinellas, you bet that the two horses you wagered on will come first and second.  After the race is finished, the order of the horses doesn't matter, and the bet won't cost you anything extra to place, like box exacta bets, for example.
  • Exacta – in this type of bet, you are wagering that the two horses you bet on will come in first and second place, but they have to finish in the exact order you placed them. There is also the option to "box" your bet, and then you won't have to worry about the order the two horses come in as long as they are in the two head spots.  Keep in mind that if you want to use the "box" option, it will cost you double the exacta bet stake. These types of bets have a lot of potential if you know your stuff.
  • Trifecta – this bet says that the three horses you bet on will come in first, second, and third place in the exact order you placed the wager. These bets are harder to place because it's not easy to predict the outcome, but the odds are usually better than others. You also have the "box" option here, but it will cost you x6 to place it like above.
  • Superfecta – following the logic from the other bets, here you place that you are sure of the order of the first four hoses to finish the race. The odds here are very attractive but require a lot of luck and horse knowledge to win this bet. It also has the "box option" available, but as usual, it will cost you a lot more to place a box superfecta bet compared to a regular superfecta.

Horse Racing Betting Tips

If you are new to horse racing betting, you should follow some of our tips to maximize your winning potential.

Find a top bookmaker for horse racing betting

This is our first piece of advice, and it's the most important one. You should look for bookmakers who offer horse racing as a part of their Sportsbook, but also, some specific bookies only specialize in Horse Racing depending on your location. You may be able to claim a Betfred promo code or William Hill free bet having made your choice.

Do your research

When betting on specific horses, like another betting, you should research their past races, the types of tracks they excel on, the jockeys that ride them. You should look into many factors before placing your first horse racing bet unless you want to rely 100% on luck.

Check out the "nap of the day"

This term is used by blogs and sportswriters to show their top pick on specific races each day. There are many places on the internet where you can find this information. If you don't want to waste time learning about the horses, tracks, and jockeys, this is your best option because experienced bettors give the advice each day with years of knowledge regarding the sport.

Place different types of bets

If you get good at placing win bets, then maybe you should branch out and think about placing an exotic wager where the payout potential is higher.

Pick the best odds

Different bookmakers offer different odds for each horse and race; you should look for the best odds available to place your bet to increase your payout potential.

Manage your funds and don’t spend them all at once

While many people rely on luck every day, we don't think that you should spend all of your cash on a single race and hope for the best. Manage your bankroll, and don't place risky bets with big stakes.
