CITY of York Hockey Club Men I won 4-2 at University of Durham III in North League east Pennine division one as their final act before a month-long lockdown paused grassroots and amateur sport across the country.

Though delayed by a crash on the way up to Durham, City - after a short warm-up - got off to a strong start with a James Fitton double.

Durham pulled two back - a goal coming either side of a Chris Newton strike - but Bertie Linnell made sure York finished on a high.

York coach Pete Fitton pleased to see his side keeping the ball with short, sharp passes and some attractive play finished with a Fitton tap-in.

More good play from York again left Fitton available for another tap-in for the second.

From a short corner, Durham got one back, and might have levelled were it not for keeper Calum McHale's intervention following the hosts' counter-attack.

After the break, Laurence Marshall drove the ball into the 'D', teasing the defence before giving the ball to Newton for an easy goal.

Following a period of end-to-end play, a couple of mistakes from the two City centre-backs gave an easy ball to the Durham forwards but McHale was equal to it.

Durham got another from a short corner - before City were reduced to nine men, with Marshall and Newton both shown yellow.

But Linnell took it upon himself to show the forwards how to score, putting a short corner away into the bottom left.

A physical Lindum side had York on the back foot early and got the goal advantage in the North Women's League east Pennine division one.

However, York were quick to react with a number of fine attacking plays starting from the defence and Amy Birch won a short corner when her shot hit a Lindum player’s foot. Macdonald netted with a mighty drag flick just before the end of the first half.

York were dominant in the early stages of the second half, with Lorna Rore and Emma Albery fantastic in defence, backed up well by keeper Charlotte Neal, who denied Lindum a number of short-corner opportunities.

Some brilliant outlets at the back from Emily Gee, Macdonald, Lorraine Pearey and Emma Brough meant that the Barker twins, Lucy and Kate, could show off their stick skills and - along with Laura Horne, Ali Couttie, Celia Wright and Lily Rowntree - create an array of attacking plays.

In the end, it was a short corner that sealed the three points for York, with Howells-Lee netting the winner from the set play.
