YORK trainer Stephen Melton has added professional boxer Sam Greenfield to his gym following his move into the paid ranks.

Greenfield was born in Milton Keynes but has made the move up to North Yorkshire to train with Melton as he begins his professional journey.

The 20-year-old, who will fight in the bantamweight division, has a successful and well-established background in Thai boxing and kickboxing.

In kickboxing, Greenfield fought for Team GB, won an amateur K1 world title in K1 and claimed an ISKA semi-pro English title.

He also fought professionally in Thailand while competing in Thai boxing.

Melton said: “Sam’s only a young lad, he’s 20-years-old.

“But, he’s a bantamweight and there’s only 20 bantamweights in Britain in the pro rankings.

“He’s an exciting young lad. He’s very sharp and I’m going to be organising some sparring for him up at (Josh) Warrington’s gym.

“He’s done some sparring with the lads at Padraic McDonagh’s gym (in Leeds), with a lad that’s looking to go pro soon and he’s around the same sort of (level) as him.

“He’s come from a Thai boxing and kickboxing background, so he’s got a huge fanbase as well.”

Greenfield will be managed by York’s Glenn Banks, who also guides the careers of light heavyweight Harry Matthews and super bantamweight Cam Shaw, both of whom are from York.

“We’re just on with getting his license sorted now and then it’s a case of seeing what we can do,” said Melton.

“Glenn’s got some contacts with MTK Global now, so we’ve got a few options with them, which is good.”

The team are waiting on Greenfield to complete his license obligations with the British Boxing Board of Control, though that is expected to be a formality.

Melton’s TSM Gym are sponsored by PB Scaffolding, Concept Windows, Hayley Owen Funeral Services, Yorkshire Cleaning Company, Jo Gough Valeting, CW Window Cleans, Motoplex and Acaster Vehicle Disposal.
