PICKERING Town manager Steve Roberts and assistant Tony Hackworth are running from Scarborough to their opening home fixture against Workington on Saturday.

The pair are aiming to raise £5,000 to maximise the club’s financial security for the 2020/21 campaign. Ahead of their 16-mile run, the duo have received more than £3,300.

On the pitch, Roberts is looking at the fixture as a good gauge of where the Pikes are at.

Workington finished the truncated 2019/20 season 10 points clear at the summit, while Pickering were five points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Roberts, though, is looking forward to the encounter and insists Pickering will be playing for a positive result in their first game back in the Northern Premier League north/west division.

“It’s going to be a test, top against bottom. But we go in with no fear and nothing to lose,” he said.

“The emphasis will be on them to win, but we’re not just going to sit back and defend.

“It will give me a good idea of what we need to work on.”

Table-mates Tadcaster Albion travel to Trafford.
