DONCASTER have signed half-back Ben Johnston from York City Knights.

York-born Johnston returned the Knights ahead of the 2020 season from fellow Betfred Championship play-off chasers Halifax.

Johnston had spent six seasons at Halifax during which time he made almost 125 appearances for the club, scoring 49 tries.

The 28-year-old went on to play five times for York in 2020, scoring one try in the club's last game in the Coral Challenge Cup win over Rochdale Hornets before the curtailment of the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He now moves to League 1 side Doncaster who finished fourth in the third tier last year.

Johnston told the Doncaster club website: “I’m really excited to be joining the Dons and looking forward to being part of a big promotion push in 2021.

“Having had such a long lay-off due to the pandemic I am feeling refreshed and eager to get going with the boys.

“After speaking to Richard Horne and Carl Hall (chief executive) and hearing their plans I knew this was the place for me to be.”
