YORK City Knights have continued their recruitment ahead of the 2021 with the signing of playmaker Morgan Smith.

The 22-year-old joins from fellow Betfred Championship promotion contenders London Broncos, where Smith played 19 times.

17 of those appearances came in the 2019 Super League season with Smith a key part of Danny Ward’s impressive side who were relegated on points difference, scoring one try, three goals and two drop goals.

The former England Academy international Smith, who plays as a half-back, began his career at Warrington Wolves and featured 26 times for the Wire, scoring two tries.

Knights head coach James Ford said: “I’m very excited to work with Morgan and help him kick on and fulfil his potential.

“I was very impressed with his maturity, intelligence and drive to be the best he can be.

“I’m confident he’ll fit right in and help us progress in the direction we’re aiming.

“Morgan has good defensive contact, an intelligent attacking game, and I believe he can develop into an outstanding running threat.

“I see Morgan as a pivotal member of our squad and I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Smith added: “I’m really happy to have signed with the Knights.

“I know that the club is on the up with plenty of ambition and I’ve seen the progress they have made over the last couple of years with a coach who I believe can help me improve and progress personally.

“Personally, I want to play the best rugby I ever have in 2021 but my overall aim is to do as much as I can to help the club push for promotion.”

Morgan is the son of ex-Knights cult hero John ‘The Bull’ Smith, who was a part of the League 1 2005 promotion-winning squad.
