STRIKER Jake Cassidy has signed for York City on a free transfer from League Two side Stevenage.

The arrival of the 27-year-old brings the Minstermen’s squad numbers up to 15 for the 2020/21 season.

Welshman Cassidy broke onto the scene at the age of 16, scoring 28 goals in 32 appearances for Llandudno Junction, before joining then Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Among others, he has since played for Oldham Athletic, Hartlepool United and Tranmere Rovers, racking up almost 300 appearances.

Cassidy said: “It’s obviously exciting times for the club moving to the new stadium and I’m looking forward to a new challenge and hoping for a successful one this season.

“I spoke to the gaffer and I spoke to Dave Penney – I know him well – and they just said about the ambition of the club and where they want to take the club and how they want to go forward and get out of this division.

“It’s something that interested me and working with the management – it was just a no-brainer for me really.”

He added: “I don’t live too far from York so It’s a city I’ve been to many times – it has a big football cub which deserves to be in a lot better division.

“I’ve played against (York) twice and scored two. It’s a massive club and hopefully I’ll be a part of the team that gets them out of this division.

“If the team has a successful season, regardless of the goals I score, obviously the more the better, as long as the team is doing well and we are preforming well then I’ll be happy - I’ll bring a lot more to the table than just that.

“I’m probably a little bit different to what they’ve had over the years. A bit more old-school target man kind of player but I’ll work hard. I’m strong, good in both boxes.

“I think they’ll enjoy it and appreciate what I bring to the team – I think I get the best out of others playing in and around me.”
