SCOTT BARROW says that he's looking forward to mentoring some of York City's younger players after announcing his arrival at the club.

Barrow and defender Robbie Tinkler became York's first signings of the summer last, with the pair adding experience to a young crop of defenders already at the club.

City have youngsters Harry Spratt (20), Josh King (19) and Charlie Jebson-King (18) in their ranks. And Barrow, 31, is more than happy to provide them with guidance.

"That part of my game is something that I'm very good at," he said. "When I was at Gateshead, we had a lot of youngsters and I think that was the reason why I was captain because I like helping other people and helping their games.

"I see that there's a lot of youngsters at York as well. We've got some experienced lads but to mix some experience with the youngsters, you're going to have a successful team.

"Hopefully I can give my input and help out those that want any help."

Barrow's arrival at York sees him link-up with manager Steve Watson and assistant Micky Cummins again, having worked with the managerial duo during their time at Gateshead.

Explaining how the move to York came about, Barrow said: "I was sitting in my house, looking after my Nan one day and Micky just rung me and asked 'What's the situation with you?'

"I said 'I've had a lot of interest but I've had no offers, that's the main thing.

"Two days later, I spoke to Micky again and he put an offer on the table and straight away I was on board. I'm really happy to get this over the line."

On his ambitions with York, Barrow added: "York is a massive club, it shouldn't be where it is. It's a Football League club. In non-league, it's one of the three biggest clubs in the non-league.

"We've got to put that right this season, we were close last year and we should have gone up. But we've got to keep those same performances from last year and I think if we do that, then we should have a successful season."
