YORKSHIRE star David Willey marked his return to the England side with a maiden five-wicket haul in a player of the match display against Ireland.
Willey was the pick of the bowlers, finishing on 5-30, as Ireland were all out 172 inside 45 overs, with England reaching the target in 28 overs to win by six wickets.
The first four of Willey's wickets came at a cost of just 12 runs in a rapid start before completing his five-fer with the final wicket of Craig Young.
It was Willey's first appearance for the England one-day side since being omitted from last year's winning World Cup squad.
The 30-year-old's team-mate, leg break spin bowler Adil Rashid, was the most economical of the England bowlers, finishing with figures of 1-26 from his 10 overs.
In England's chase, Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow was out lbw to Andy McBrine for just two while Jason Roy (24), James Vince (25) and Tom Banton (11) fell cheaply to leave the hosts 78-4.
But an unbeaten 96 partnership from Sam Billings (67) and captain Eoin Morgan (36) saw England home. England will look to seal a series victory in the second ODI at the Ageas Bowl tomorrow (2pm).
