YORKSHIRE encountered early afternoon problems with the bat during their friendly with Durham at Emerald Headingley, giving debutant Dawid Malan two bites at the cherry. And he made the most of a welcome second chance.

England’s T20 star, batting at four, hit 12 off 23 balls before lunch, only to return to the crease midway through the afternoon following a loss of 6-14 inside 12 overs.

In his ‘second innings’, he totted up an eye-catching 64 off 113 balls before retiring as the hosts closed on 260-12 from 90 overs.

Yorkshire will hope their post lunch collapse is a blip and they can shine against the same opponents at Emirates Riverside on Saturday when the Bob Willis Trophy begins.

Adam Lyth prospered for the second warm-up game running, adding 60 off 121 balls to his unbeaten 108 against Lancashire here on Friday. He hit eleven fours.

White Rose members watching on the club’s live stream would have seen play take place in bright but blustery conditions, with the odd brief rain shower sweeping across the ground.

Play started a day late after a rain wiped out day one on Monday.

The two sides have agreed to play out the final day of this fixture today, but completely behind closed doors and with no live stream or the presence of any non-cricket personnel for operational reasons. Durham will be batting.

Yorkshire are involving 16 players to Durham’s 14, with seam quartet Paul Coughlin, Ben Raine, Chris Rushworth and Matthew Salisbury all prospering. Coughlin and Raine struck three times apiece.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore was the first wicket to fall for nine, bowled offering no shot to Rushworth (15-1 after nine overs).

Will Fraine (3) then edged Matty Potts to first slip - 27-2 in the 17th over, bringing new signing Malan to the middle for the first time.

It took him five balls to get off the mark, and he went on to hit two boundaries before being well caught at second slip following an attempted drive at Salisbury, leaving the hosts at 56-3 in the 24th.

Almost immediately after lunch came trouble.

Lyth fell when he chipped Salisbury to mid-on, leaving the score at 99-4 in the 36th over.

Harry Brook (10) was lbw to Raine, who also had George Hill (1) caught behind and Jonny Tattersall (9) lbw - 109-7 in the 43rd.

Matthew Waite (0) was then well caught at third slip by a diving Potts off Coughlin in the 45th over before the same bowler had Matthew Fisher (2) lbw in the 47th - 113-9.

Malan returned to the crease upon Hill’s departure, the sixth wicket, and did so under the guise of young wicketkeeper-batsman Harry Duke on the online scorecard.

Circumspect and solid before fluency came, the left-hander helped to blunt Durham’s charge with the help of all-rounder Jordan Thompson.

He had to briefly face the part-time off-spin of former Yorkshire batsman Alex Lees, who only has two first-class wickets to his name.

Both came whilst playing for the White Rose, in the 2016 Championship title decider against Middlesex at Lord’s when try to set up a final day declaration.

Yes, you guessed it, his maiden first-class wicket was Malan!

Either side of tea, Malan and Thompson shared 65 inside 24 overs for the 10th wicket.

Thompson’s encouraging 32 including a quartet of boundaries before he edged Rushworth to third slip, leaving the score at 178-10 in the 71st.

Malan reached 50 off 105 balls and went on to hit seven fours in all before retiring to give Brook (3), Fraine (27 not out) and Tattersall (13) more time at the crease.
