NEW Earswick IBC Falcons enjoyed an 87-71 win over Hornsea in the Yorkshire Over-55s Indoor Bowls League.

At home, John Harrison, Bob Elliot, Barry Johnson and Kevin Liddell had a to-and-fro encounter. After leading 6-1 with six ends gone, Hornsea hit back to level.

But New Earswick won the next three ends - including a seven at the 11th end - to go 18-6 in front and the teams shared the last 10 ends for a 25-12 home win.

The other home rink took a similar path to victory. With the help of a six and a four, Dave Imeson, Rod Walker, Dick Osguthorpe and Mick Head led 13-7 after eight ends.

Hornsea pulled the score back to 13-12 with a single and consecutive fours at the next three ends but over the last 10 ends, the Falcons outscored their opponents for a 24-16 win.

In Hornsea, Brian Birch, Graham Lockwood, Eric Cookson and Ralph Tiplady got off to a slow start but picked up and led 21-15, but Hornsea pulled it back to tie the rink 21-21.

Dave Clayden, Paul Murray, Colin Pickup and Bill Waldie were always just behind in their match, trailing 16-10 after 16 ends on their way to a 22-17 defeat.

New Earswick Ladies lost 66-59 to Leeds in the Yorkshire League.

Kay Hutchinson, Moira Ellis, Margaret Morgan and Jennie Philpott suffered from a slow start in a 20-11 defeat.

Lesley Nuckey, Pat Gibb, Ann Lea and Irene Warrington led 10-3 after nine ends and dominated in a 23-6 win.

At Leeds, after losing the first three ends, Carole Thompson, Christine Pickup, Jackie Toms and Norma Davies won the next six to lead 9-7.

But the Leeds rink fought back, winning four of the next five ends - including a five at the 11th end - and went on to win 19-14.

Rebecca Connolly, Veronica Connolly, Kath Sykes and Sally Domville won five of the first seven ends, but dropped two fives to be 8-7 down before only scoring more two singles at the next eight ends to go 16-9 behind. They slipped to a 21-11 defeat.

York enjoyed an 80-63 success against North Cave in the Yorkshire Ladies League.

Three rinks won and one drew for York, who picked up nine of the 10 points at stake and moved to the top of the league.

Pat Berwick, Sue Tomlinson, Sue Kirkpatrick and Pauline Cooper were 5-0 down after only two ends before picking up the maximum eight shots to take the lead on the third and kept it up to finish, withstanding a late surge by their opponents to win 18-17.

Also at home, Joan Jackson, Margaret Sadler, Betty Richardson and Carol Instone made a great comeback after trailing 18-9 with four ends to play. They won them all, scoring 14 shots to finish 23-18 winners.

Away, Carol Banks, Tina Robinson, Pauline Armitage and Melanie Brooke showed no mercy as they went 15-7 up, and did not look back as they went on to win 24-13.

Pat Walker, Maureen Walker, Pat Potter and Sheila Turpin also got off to a good start as they led 9-0 after five ends but the home team pulled it back to 9-9 by the 11th, after which it was honours even in a 15-15 draw.

On Saturday (noon) York face Scarborough in the North Eastern League.

York 'D' were disappointed to lose 77-75 in the Yorkshire League division three to Harrogate 'B'.

John Headley, Steve Elsey, Dave Berwick and Steve Lea were on top form and only lost four ends throughout their game, which finished 34-8.

John Munday, John Sandle, John Hughes and Dave Preece struggled to get into their game and went down 22-8.

In Harrogate, Pete Waring, Dave Snarr, John Walton and Colin Robinson made a great come back as they went from 13-5 down to win 19-18.

Alan Potter, Dennis Walls, Ian Mackland and Vic Woolley found it tough and lost 29-14.

On Saturday, York 'A' play Selby in division one, the 'B' team meet Leeds in division two and the 'C' team are in division three action against Selby 'B'. All three games start at noon.

There was disappointment for York's second and third teams in the Yorkshire O55s League as the Knights lost 85-63 in division one against North Cave White and the Romans suffered a 71-67 division two loss against Selby.

The Knights' only successes came from Colin Robinson, Eric Hodgson, Dave Berwick and Steve Lea, who won 22-16, and from the away rink of Allen Clapham, Dave Elcock, Jim Robertson and Graham Instone, who drew 15-15.

The other away rink of Alan Braithwaite, Barry Walker, Dave Clough and Geoff Walker lost 34-12 while Pete Waring, Vic Woolley, Dave Preece and David White lost 20-14.

The Romans' Pete Waring, John Walton, Ian Mackland and Mike Snowden had an impressive 24-8 victory in Selby. Andy Lockwood, Dennis Walls, Noel Mallen and Dave Clarke lost 22-18.

At home, Charlie Arnett, Rod Knight, Wally Darbyshire and Mal Rankeillor lost 21-13 and Ray Wynn, Dave Snarr, Norman Ellis and Trevor Scott went down 20-12.
