HOLDERS York finally began their Yetton Trophy campaign with a win over Scunthorpe, having been given a walkover in their previous game.

York were made to fight all the way by a determined Scunthorpe, but they had the advantage at the key stages.

They were thankful to Dot Kennelly, Lynda Parker, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison who finished with an impressive 41-6 victory.

Carol Banks, Pauline Armitage, Sue Kirkpatrick and Helen Wood trailed 18-12 with two ends to go before they pulled off an amazing victory with a two then a six to finish 20-18.

Away, Joan Jackson, Tina Robinson, Maureen Walker and Carol Instone were level at 13-13 after 13 ends before going down 23-15.

Pat Walker, Pat Potter, Betty Richardson and Sheila Turpin lost 28-15.

York now play Harrogate on December 7.

York eased past Leeds in the Denny Cup, winning three rinks in a 87-59 victory.

At home, Harley Wenham, Jo Mann, Kieran Earnshaw and Dave Stroughair won 19-10 and Alan Vowles, Mick Cooney, John Crowe and Tony Horobin won 19-12.

Away, Nathan Richards, John Walker, Mark Clarke and Jack Bird won 31-11 and Phil Parsons, Graham Brooke, Jeff Normanton, and Craig Newton lost 26-18.

York now play Gateshead in the next round on December 7.

On Saturday, in the Yorkshire League at Thanet Road, all starting at noon as York 'B' take on North Cave 'B' in division two, while in division three York 'C' play Doncaster 'B' and York 'D' play Selby 'B'.

York Knights suffered a disappointing 91-77 defeat as they lost to Hornsea Seagulls, picking up four points thanks to two winning rinks.

Away, Colin Robinson, Norman Ellis, Barry Walker and Geoff Walker trailed 12-0 after six ends but fought back and won the last three ends to win an amazing game 24-18.

Ken Robinson, Vic Woolley, Dave Elcock and Graham Instone were also involved in a close game but lost 25-16.

At home, Wally Darbyshire, David Clough, David White and Pete Bradley overturned a 13-8 deficit into a 28-16 victory.

Alan Braithwaite, Dave Holder, Dave Clarke and Steve Lea lost 32-9.

Tomorrow at noon, the Knights are in action again as they play Redcar.

NEW Earswick lost 97-61 to Selby in the second round of the Denny Plate.

Dave Imeson, Paul Murray, Eric Cookson and Dick Osguthorpe dropped a four at the second end but were only 5-4 down after five ends.

Selby then won the next five ends to lead 15-4, but Earswick fought back to within five shots, at 17-12, with four ends to play.

Selby though finished strongly and won 26-13.

Dave Furness, Bob Elliot, Gary Jones and Ralph Tiplady battled back from 10-1 down after six ends to be level at 15-15 after 14 ends.

But, then New Earswick only scored one more single to go down 24-16.

Over at Selby, John Harrison, Bill Nuckey, Bill Waldie and Colin Pickup matched Selby for the first 10 ends.

Earswick were only one shot behind at 8-7 but dropped 11 shots at the next five ends while only scoring one themselves to go 19-8 behind and slip to a 23-13 defeat.

In the final rink, Andy Humphreys, Rob Domville, Andrew Fothergill and Kevin Liddell dropped two fours in the first 10 ends but only trailed 11-10.

Earswick lost the next seven ends to go 22-10 behind and they then picked up nine shots at the next three ends to go into the last end just three behind but dropped a two to lose 24-19.
