YORK is set to host its first-ever Super League game in 2020.

The new Community Stadium will stage the top flight fixture between Toronto Wolfpack and Wakefield Trinity on Sunday, March 22 as part of a double header with a York City Knights game in the Betfred Championship.

The agreement to put on one of Wolfpack’s early games following their promotion to Super League throws up the mouthwatering prospect of Sonny Bill Williams featuring in the Minster city.

The two-time rugby union World Cup winner is being widely tipped to become the Canadian side’s biggest signing of the close season.

Toronto won promotion to Super League last month and will play at York as part of their three home 'loop' fixtures which take place in the UK, with the other two taking place at Headingley and the Allianz Park.

York's opponents for the double header will be confirmed when the Championship fixtures are released on Sunday, November 17.

Knights chairman Jon Flatman said: “This is an exciting development in the growth of rugby league in York and North Yorkshire. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the local community to see top class sport in wonderful new community stadium facilities.

“Tickets will be on sale soon and I am sure it’ll be a world class event that’s not to be missed. Let’s aim for a sell-out and a day to remember for everyone!

“A big thank you to David Argyle (owner) and Martin Vickers (UK general manager) at Toronto Wolfpack, and City of York Council and the Stadium Management Company for their support in making this a reality in addition to the RFL and Super League for supporting this initiative.”

Elsewhere, York have confirmed their first two 2020 pre-season friendlies.

The campaign begins with a trip to the LD Nutrition Stadium to face Featherstone Rovers on Sunday, January 5 (3pm kick-off) in a rematch of the two sides' Championship play-off semi-final.

The Knights will then host Halifax on Sunday, January 19 (3pm kick-off) at Bootham Crescent, in what could be the club's final game at the ground.
