York City are "riding on crest of a wave" says Micky Cummins

National League North leaders York host Boston United tomorrow night (7.45pm) with the chance to go eight points clear at the top.

But Cummins believes the team - now 23 games unbeaten since the second game of pre-season - have a target on their backs.

The latest in this outstanding run was a 1-0 win at promotion rivals Chester, after which boss Steve Watson said there might be a couple of injuries to look at.

Cummins reports the side are "looking okay" - and says if he were still playing, he would want to push through any niggles to avoid missing out.

He said: "When we play Saturday to Saturday, it's a long week.

"We get our work done in the week but when you're on the crest of that wave, you want the games coming.

"You want the lads to commit to the game and the preparation and you want the same results.

"It's good for us and it's fantastic for them because they want to keep on playing.

"If I was playing, I would want to be getting through any sort of little niggle to be playing the next game.

"We've got that momentum and we're on the crest of a wave, a big wave.

"You don't want to be missing games.

"That's the type of group and attitude we have in there.

"Nothing's really going to hold them back.

"It's up to myself and the gaffer to decide if it's worth risking them.

"We're a scalp for anyone," he added.

"Any team coming to Bootham on a Tuesday night, it does bring out the best.

"And we have to be at our best because we can't take our foot off the gas and be thinking it's a given because that certainly isn't the case in this league.

"Fans travelled really well to Chester.

"They were in full voice and created a good atmosphere.

"We're looking forward to it under the lights and putting on a good show."

Cummins also insisted the players can be trusted to make appropriate judgement calls - in both injury management and upholding standards in training and games.

The returning Dan Maguire, Saturday's goalscorer, has made himself available for Tuesday, as has Steve McNulty, who has been back in playing action only a week longer following his hamstring injury lay-off.

Of the squad as a whole, Cummins said: "They know their own bodies. They're mature lads. They know when to rest here and there to get themselves right and in contention for the next game.

"We manage them as best we can but their mentality is spot on. We trust them and the physios.

"They're an honest bunch," he added. "They take pride in their work in training and in the games.

"It makes the success sweeter when you you put in the graft in training and you see it come to fruition on a Saturday.

"We've got to mention Pete in there - he's got 10 clean sheets. He's made a massive, massive difference.

"They've got that winning, dogged strength in mentality.

"If they let it slip in training, they're the first to react. Sometimes me and the gaffer don't have to say anything.

"They recognise when they've not been at it and they rectify it themselves."

Boston currently sit 13th in the table with one away win to their name.

Jordan Thewlis' eight goals make him the Pilgrims' top scorer, four ahead of former Harrogate Town striker Dom Knowles.

York loanee Jake Wright has three goals this season but a hamstring injury will keep him out of action until the weekend at least, though he would not be able to play anyway against York.

The sides drew 2-2 in York last term.

Cummins said: "They're a good solid unit. They have experience at the back, grafters in the middle of the pitch and they've got goals in them. They'll be a threat.

"It's alright having games in hand but we want the points on the board.

"We're the only team playing tomorrow so we want to get the points."
