THE Legions boxing gym recorded an incredible 100 per cent winning run in the month of September.

11 competitive fights took place involving boxers from gym, which is based in Clifton Moor, producing 11 wins for the York club.

Zac Evans, 22, was one of the stand-out winners during the month as he made the second defence of his Elite Yorkshire 69kg title after taking a unanimous decision against hometown fighter Joe Garside in Hebden Bridge.

In other title action, Brad Casey won the junior Yorkshire Development championship 52kg belt.

The 14-year-old defeated Harvey Kemp in the semi-final by split decision before taking a unanimous decision over Shaun-Paul Knight - forcing two standing eight counts in the final round.

Casey, who became the sixth fighter from Legions to win a Yorkshire title in the past 12 months, will now go on to box in the National quarter-finals in Bridlington on Sunday, October 13.

In other competitive fights, there were victories for Dion Sharpe, Henry Marshall, Jamie-Leigh Smith, Reece Fitzgerald and Tom Scaife.

Also fighting to wins on their competitive debuts were Rosanna Bycroft, Leo Atang and Lewis Clough - the latter two scoring standing eight counts.

Luca Pearson and Sam Holmes boxed in three skills bouts (fights where no result is given), Bycroft boxed in two and Atang boxed in one.

National champion Riley Edeson and Lewis Clough were unfortunately unable to box due to their opponents coming overweight.

Ashley Martin, the head boxing coach at the Legions Gym said: “Our great start to the season is a reflection of the efforts of the boxers and coaches during pre-season training.

“Every single boxer has excelled with their fitness and it shows in every bout we’ve been in so far. There’s lots of skilful boxers on the scene, but most struggle to keep up with the pace our boxers set in the ring.

“We wouldn’t be able to get out to as many shows were it not for the readiness of the boxers and voluntary commitment from the coaches.

“We can often be at multiple different shows on the same day and in a lot of cases we take bouts at a few days notice, sometimes just a few hours!

“I take great pride in knowing the team are all ready to go should we get that call!

“This has been a dream start to the season for us, with Paris (Smith) winning the European Gold in August, and the team kicking off with 11 wins out of 11 contests is incredible!

“We’re at the standard now where going unbeaten isn’t easy, we’ve a lot of boxers just finding their feet with the sport, as well as others competing at the top level.

“However I have complete faith in each and every boxer we enter into a bout or tournament that they have what it takes to come out victorious.

“We could just as easily pick up a loss in one of our next outings as we could go another 11 unbeaten, and the team is training with the mindset that they want to continue this streak of excellence.

“I’d also like to thank the club’s sponsor SAY Scaffolding for their continued support.”

Elsewhere at the gym, the club have confirmed their next home amateur show which will take place at the Acomb WMC on Friday, November 8.
