SURPRISE package York City Knights picked up two gongs at the Betfred Championship and League One awards night in Manchester.

The Bootham Crescent club were named Championship Club of the Year after finishing third in the table, the highest-ranked British side outside Super League.

Highly-rated boss James Ford was then acclaimed as the Championship Coach of the Year, ahead of Toronto Wolfpack's Brian McDermott and Sheffield Eagles' Mark Aston.

Ford has won admirers across rugby league for steering the Knights into the Championship play-offs against the odds, defying those who tipped them for a battle against relegation.

Having finished third behind Toronto and Toulouse in the table, York's campaign ended last weekend in a 30-4 home play-off defeat to Featherstone Rovers.

Chairman Jon Flatman and Ford have overseen rapid improvement in York's fortunes, with the 2019 success following last year's League One title-winning campaign.
