ADAM LYTH starred with five wickets and 48, but it wasn’t enough as Yorkshire failed to chase 149 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and are out of Vitality Blast quarter-final contention.

A three-run defeat, which included 12 needed off the last over, was the Vikings' fifth in 12 North Group games.

Lyth’s off-spinners yielded a career best 5-31 and helped restrict Notts to 148-7 by taking a third of his career wickets in a four-over spell on a used pitch.

After taking three wickets in Friday’s win over Durham, he wheeled away again to become the seventh Yorkshire bowler to take five in a T20 innings and the second in as many games after Jack Shutt against Durham.

But no one has ever done as much with ball and bat.

Unfortunately, Jordan Thompson missed three balls in the last over from Harry Gurney, which started with Will Fraine hitting a six over long-on.

The tired pitch suited the Lyth handy spinners. It had been used earlier in the day for a women’s Super League game.

Lyth bowled the first and last overs of the Notts innings after they had elected to bat, while David Willey and excellent Tim Bresnan contributed to restricting the hosts to a six-over power play score of 30-2 as timing proved tricky.

Bresnan was the only other bowler of the Vikings six-man attack to strike, finishing with 2-17 from three overs, while spinners Shutt and Keshav Maharaj were also tidy.

Bresnan had Alex Hales caught at cover and Ben Duckett caught at mid-on, leaving the score at 16-2 in the fifth over.

Opener Joe Clarke, who top-scored with 50 off 46 balls, and Jake Libby (35) shared 66 for the third wicket to steady the Outlaws after a slow start, but Lyth puts the skids under their acceleration bid late on.

He had Libby superbly caught on the run by Will Fraine at long-off (82-3 in the 14th) and then Tom Moores and Clarke caught at short fine-leg and short third-man by Shutt with successive deliveries in the 16th.

Australian Dan Christian hit the lion’s share of 17 in the penultimate over off Willey, but Lyth restored order by removing Samit Patel and Luke Fletcher in the last over, both caught in the deep.

The Notts innings was interrupted by loud cheers from the crowd as they kept up with England’s Ashes victory pursuit.

Lyth then hit two boundaries off left-arm quick Luke Wood in the first over of the Yorkshire chase, only for him to be involved in a mix-up with Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the third over, resulting in the latter being run out (15-1).

Lyth found the fence twice more in the fifth off Fletcher’s seam and the Vikings reached the end of the power play after six overs at 42-1.

Willey (23) was bowled by Libby’s part-time off-spin as Yorkshire reached 10 overs at 71-2.

Lyth pulled and sliced two fours in three balls off Christian’s seamers in the 11th over, but he miscued to backward point off Harry Gurney’s pace off left-arm seamers in the 14th, leaving Yorkshire at 99-3.

Jonny Tattersall fell lbw to Samit Patel in the next over before Yorkshire’s target became 23 off three overs and 18 off two with Jack Leaning - who it was announced yesterday is joining Kent next season - and Fraine together.

Leaning and Bresnan were bowled by Fletcher at either end of the 19th, leaving Fraine on strike with 12 needed off the last from Gurney.

He hit his six and was then caught at short third-man before Gurney saw the game out.

The Vikings host Northamptonshire in their penultimate group game at Emerald Headingley on Thursday (6.30pm).
