EXPERIENCED centre-back Steve McNulty will be York City's club captain for the 2019/2020 Vanarama National League North campaign.

The 35-year-old defender, who signed from Tranmere in the summer, will take the armband for the Minstermen's opening fixture of the season tomorrow at Altrincham (3pm).

McNulty has won six promotions with four different clubs - Barrow, Fleetwood Town, Luton Town, and Tranmere - and has clocked up nearly 600 career appearances, captaining all four clubs in the process.

Manager Steve Watson said: “With Steve it’s like having another coach out on the pitch, he helps the back four, he’s a proven leader and has won promotion at various levels."

McNulty replaces striker Jordan Burrow as captain.

Meanwhile, Watson has also added 19-year-old Harry Spratt to his squad.

The ex-Manchester United and Huddesfield Town academy player will join up with the first team subject to FA and National League approval.

Watson said: “We have great experience in our squad, but he is something different. He’s done a lot of things in training that I like.”
