YORK City boss Steve Watson is satisfied with his summer recruitment - but says there is still scope to bring in an eye-catching signing.

With 19 first-team players on the books as well as a handful of youngsters and some trialists arriving for assessment over the next few days, Watson says he is in a better position than he was last year at Gateshead.

The City chief also says his squad are bedding together well.

"At the moment I've got a good number and a good mix," he said. "I'm not bringing in players for the sake of it.

"I've been careful with which ones I've added. There's scope to bring another one in, if a really exciting player becomes available.

"I'm certainly better off than I was at this time last year with Gateshead, where we had 12 at pre-season and only three signed on.

"I'm really happy with where we are."

Experienced centre-back Steve McNulty is the latest addition to Watson's squad, joining Andy Bond, Kieran Green, keeper Peter Jameson and Dan Maguire at Bootham Crescent ahead of the 2019/20 National League North season.

Watson added: "I was chatting with Micky (Cummins, assistant) and saying they've bonded really well, they're backing each other up in the running, where some are better than others, and rooting for each other to get through.

"One of the first things I said was that we need a good, strong dressing room and, from the early signs, they're going to get on great as a group.

Midfielder Simon Heslop has joined the team at pre-season to aid his recovery from a knee injury, though Dan Parslow has not taken up the club's offer as yet.

Watson said: "Simon is going through his rehabilitation, which as a club we should be doing, and when he's fit, we'll have a chat and we'll have a look at him."

City start their pre-season programme on Wednesday (7pm) at Bootham Crescent with the visit of Leeds United.

Home games are pay on the turnstile, £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
