MAX McMillan – the son of York City legend Andy – is one of three York schoolboys to have signed scholarship contracts with Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

Striker McMillan has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, along with fellow York-based hopefuls Connor Teale and Maximus Rigby.

The trio will now train full-time at Elland Road from July, while studying for a BTEC in sports science.

All three players have already played for Leeds under-18s this season, as well as the U16 team.

McMillan is a Joseph Rowntree pupil who started out playing for Haxby Town U7s, before representing Leeds from the age of eight onwards.

Huntington School student Teale’s first team was Strensall Tigers U6s.

He went on to play for York Schoolboys and City’s U12 side, before joining Leeds at U16 level.

Rigby is also at Joseph Rowntree and played for Haxby Town U8s and York Schoolboys, before representing Leeds from the age of ten. Leeds’ academy is now rated the second best in the country.

Former City striker Richard Cresswell is the club’s head of academy coaching and McMillan, Teale and Rigby will be hoping to follow in the recent footsteps of fellow York-reared footballers Jack Clarke and Sam Bryram.

Winger Clarke made his professional debut at the age of 17 in October and has since made 19 appearances for Leeds this season, scoring two goals in the Championship.

Right-back Byram – another former Joseph Rowntree student – broke through to Leeds’ first team at the age of 18 and went on to make 143 senior appearances before joining West Ham, where he featured in the Premier League for three seasons prior to a loan move to Nottingham Forest this term.

Harrogate-born, 17-year-old striker Ryan Edmondson has also managed a couple of senior outings for the former Champions League semi-finalists having left Bootham Crescent in November 2017.

Edmondson scored both goals last month as Leeds U23s clinched the Professional Development League North title with a 2-0 triumph at Colchester, with the team eventually finishing nine points clear at the top.

The U18s, meanwhile, only missed out on on goal difference to Sheffield Wednesday at the top of their table.
