YORK City boss Billy McEwan is challenging his side to match their points return over the last five matches for the rest of the season.

McEwan's men have taken ten points from a possible 15, with the only blip last weekend's 4-1 defeat against Histon.

Grays Athletic (2-0), Halifax Town (3-2) and Stafford Rangers (2-0), meanwhile, have all been seen off and Oxford held to a 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium.

The City boss feels his 19th-placed side will soon climb the Blue Square Premier table if they can match that points-per-game ratio and, speaking ahead of tomorrow's 1pm clash at Woking, McEwan said: "We've taken ten points from five games and that's good form.

"If you average two points a game, you won't be far away at the end of the season, although we know we have a long way to go and are still playing catch-up.

"In our last two away games, we've also taken four points so hopefully we can take more tomorrow."

Woking are in the midst of a good run themselves having drawn at early title contenders Stevenage on Tuesday night following back-to-back victories against Northwich (3-1) and Farsley (2-0).

But McEwan is more worried about his own side's performance rather than that of their hosts.

He said: "They had a very creditable draw against Stevenage and I saw them when they were unlucky at Halifax, but we know what we have to do. We need to be professional, organised and disciplined."

Striker Craig Farrell will not figure in the squad for Kingfield with his thigh injury still causing problems after a 20-minute outing for the reserves during the 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

McEwan is also hoping that the squad's fringe players can step up their claims for first-team inclusion in coming weeks.

He said: "Some of the players we have brought in have got to catch up fitness-wise and come up to the standards we expect.

"We want them pushing for places because we need that competition so people are looking over their shoulders.

"Anthony Lloyd is one, having come back from being part-time and not training every day. It's the same with Russell Fry even though they're both doing well in training."

McEwan has also instructed centre-back David McGurk to exercise his caution as one more yellow card will see him incur a one-match ban.

The City boss said: "He has got to be careful because, with five or six people still in the treatment room, the last thing we want is to lose players through suspension."

Meanwhile, McEwan is also still running the rule over former Le Mans and Paris St Germain reserve team striker Jonathan Topkle.

The 21-year-old frontman played as a trialist for City reserves on Wednesday night.
