YORK Indoor Bowls Club scraped into the last 32 of the EIBA Over-60s Double Rinks thanks to a 28-26 win over Harrogate.

Thornaby will be York's next opponents on Tuesday, January 8.

The home rink of Alan Hampshire, Trevor Wilford, Malcolm Lewars and Dave Stroughair lost a close game 15-11 after dropping a two and a single on the final two ends.

In Harrogate, though, Alan Vowles, Phil Parsons, Phil Wilsher and John Whiteley won the final five ends to recover from 11-10 down to win 17-11.

York Vikings, however, lost by a single shot to Harrogate in Yorkshire Over-55s League division one.

In Harrogate, the rink of John Whitely, Phil Parsons, Barry Walker and Gordon Fennell enjoyed a 27-21 victory thanks to a purple patch midway through which saw them score nine shots without reply.

Malcolm Lewars, Mick Cooney, Trevor Wilford and Alan Vowles also held a five-shot advantage but the home rink levelled at 15-15 before finishing strongly to take a 22-17 win.

At home, Graham Brooke, Alan Hampshire, Jim Robertson and Ken Griffiths only lost 18-15, having been eight shots down after 10 ends.

In the deciding match, Mal Bulmer, Dave Dale, Malcom Harrison and Graham Instone had six- and four-shot advantages wiped out as the first 18 ends finished level at 14-14 before two singles gave them the edge going into the final end.

With Harrogate lying one, their skipper decided not to bowl his final wood, thus losing his match 16-15 but taking the aggregate.

Meanwhile, New Earswick Bowls Club Ospreys narrowly beat Scarborough 77-74 in the Yorkshire Over-55s League.

The division two clash saw both sides win a rink at each venue, including an Earswick comeback victory on the Yorkshire coast.

At Huntington Road, Dave Crane, Vic Woolley, Howard Darrell and Graham Bell led all the way en route to a 22-14 victory. The home rink were 3-2 ahead after five ends and increased their lead to 19-6, winning nine of the next 11. But Scarborough hit back, claiming four of the last six ends, including a four at the 16th.

Dave Furness, Barrie Shipley, John Taylor and Alwyn Anderson lost an early three-end lead and found themselves 14-4 down after 10 ends. A five and a single aided their recovery to 14-10 but only managed four singles to go down 14-23.

At Scarborough, Steve Connolly, Rodger Cann, Dave Hutchinson and Gary Stockton matched their opponents shot-for-shot on the first 11 ends before Scarborough picked up a four and a single to lead 16-11. This kicked Earswick into action, and they scored 13 shots over the last eight ends to win 24-17.

Phil Whitehead, Dave Toms, Vic Thompson and Bob Barrett were all-square at 7-7 after 10 ends but lost four of the next five ends to go 15-8 behind. They picked up a six and a pair to lead 16-15 with four ends to play but only managed a single at the last as they lost 20-17.
