YORK Indoor Bowls Club are into the last 16 of the Yetton Trophy following an 82-68 win over Scunthorpe.

On January 5, York will contest the fifth round against Houghton for a place in the quarter-finals.

The club have also had two international call-ups. A consistent year for Helen Wood has earned her a call-up to the England team in the Disability Games Home Internationals in Glasgow (March 22-24) while clubmate Jack Bird has been recalled to the England Under-25s for the BIIBC International Series in Aberdeen (February 16-17).

York owe much of their Yetton Trophy success to the rink of Carol Banks, Betty Richardson, Sue Kirkpatrick and Wood, who won all but one of their opening seven ends on the way to a 33-12 win.

They led 13-1 after the seven ends before picking up 15 shots over five ends to go from 18-9 to 33-11.

Dot Kennelly, Maureen Walker, Pauline Armitage and Linda Harrison also got off to a good start, leading 9-3 after five ends, but they could not capitalise and lost their last five ends to slip from a 16-14 lead to lose 21-16.

In Scunthorpe, Joan Jackson, Pat Potter, Sheila Turpin and Carol Instone claimed a valuable 18-17 victory. The rink were in good form and only dropped singles or twos throughout the game, while picking up two fours and two threes.

Lynda Parker, Tina Robinson, Hayley Robinson and Helen Walker were 17-10 down with five ends to play but had the best of the run-in and only lost 18-15.

York Vikings proved too strong as they picked up a maximum 14 points in a 110-61 win over Selby in the Yorkshire Over-55s League division one.

At home, Gordon Fennell, Trevor Wilford, Dave Dale and Mal Bulmer were trailing 8-5 before winning 10 successive ends to lead 28-8. This proved too much for John Phillips' side, and the game finished 32-12.

Malcolm Harrison, Mick Cooney, Graham Brooke and Malcolm Lewars won a tight game 26-16, pulling away over the last couple of ends with a four and a five.

A tight game in Selby saw Alan Vowles, Graham Instone, Phil Parsons and Jeff Normanton turn around a 12-10 deficit after nine ends to win 20-15 after dropping only singles in the run-in.

Ken Griffiths, Alan Hampshire, Phil Wilsher and John Whiteley took five ends to go from 8-6 to 17-9 en route to a 32-18 win. The Vikings' last game of the year is tomorrow at noon against Harrogate.

On Sunday, York IBC hosts the Top Club game between Blackpool Newton Hall and Darlington (11am) before York play a friendly against Erewash (2.30pm).
