IN-FORM York RI RUFC bolstered their promotion credentials in Yorkshire Four with an 11-0 win at fellow hopefuls Hessle.

An excellent team performance, built on resilient defence, a strong set-piece and an excellent kicking game, moved RI third ahead of bottom side Sheffield Oaks' visit to New Lane on Saturday.

A tough game was expected on a wet, muddy pitch against a typically physical Hessle side, and that was what unfolded.

Hessle applied early pressure but, with mistakes creeping in from both sides due to the conditions, RI were able to take control of field position through excellent tactical kicking from half-backs Baptiste Briu and Tim Lewis and good chases.

RI maintained pressure and got the first score from a scrum, with youngster Jonny Evans crossing following good interplay from number eight Adam Osguthorpe and Briu.

RI established good field position again and, while more strong defence prevented a further try, ill-discipline was creeping into the Hessle game and towards the end of the half Briu made it 8-0 with a penalty.

The second half started in similar fashion with RI controlling territory, but they were again restricted to three points via another Briu penalty, due to good defence and handling errors.

Hessle, 11-0 down going into the last quarter, began to find success on the gain line and began to work their way downfield.

RI conceded penalties under pressure and were pinned in their own half for the remainder of the game but they defended stoutly and prevented any clear-cut opportunities.
