HOLDERS York Indoor Bowls Club got off to a great start in their Yetton Trophy tie against Hornsea - but were left scraping through after their opponents' spirited fightback.

York led 58-28 after 10 ends but with three to play Hornsea had pulled it back to 76-70.

The holders hung on as two rinks picked up singles on their last end, making the final score 84-80.

At home, Lynda Parker, Tina Robinson, Hayley Robinson and Helen Walker led 21-6 at the half-way stage and finished 30-18.

Carol Banks, Pauline Armitage, Sue Kirkpatrick and Helen Wood led 17-8 at half-way. Hornsea pulled it back to 19-16 with four to play, but Wood's team won the remainder to finish 24-16.

In Hornsea, Joan Jackson, Pat Potter, Sheila Turpin and Carol Instone led 18-10 with six to play but had to hold on for a 20-19 victory.

Dot Kennelly, Maureen Walker, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison lost 27-10 - but fortunately kept the home side to a single on their crucial last end.

York now play Scunthorpe in the last 32 on December 8.

Meanwhile, York Vikings remain unbeaten at the top of Yorkshire Over-55s League division one after an 85-59 derby victory over New Earswick Falcons, picking up 12 of the 14 points at stake.

Both Vikings rinks won at Huntington Road with Alan Hampshire, Mick Cooney, Malcolm Lewars and Tony Horobin winning eight successive ends from the 13th to the last, scoring 15 shots, to beat Graham Lockwood, Paul Murray, Bill Waldie and Kevin Liddell 26-9.

Graham Instone, Barry Walker, Phil Wilsher and Dave Stroughair picked up a match-winning five at the last end to beat home quartet Bob Elliott, Dave Kermode, Mick Head and Barry Johnson 23-20.

Johnson's rink had led 12-2 after seven ends but York hit back to lead 14-13 after 15 and 18-17 after 19. Stroughair also held shot at the 20th but with his last bowl took his nearest wood out to give Earswick three shots and a 20-18 lead.

Stroughair, though, made up for his error by removing the Earswick winner at the last end to pick up the decisive five.

At Thanet Road, the Vikings' rink of Ken Griffiths, Jim Robertson, Roger Ford and Graham Brooke beat Dave Imeson, Jim Spicer, Dave Sykes and Colin Ellis 22-15 after a ding-dong contest.

New Earswick got their two points through Eric Cookson, Rod Walker, Brian Birch and Ralph Tiplady.

They took the lead for the first time with a five on the third-last end. A single by York's Gordon Fennell, Trevor Wilford, Dave Dale and Phil Parsons drew the teams level only for Tiplady's quartet to take the honours with a single on the last.

There was disappointment for York Romans in division two as they lost 109-57 to Hornsea Hawks, picking up only one point thanks to Andy Lockwood, Alan Yoward, Trevor Scott and Ray Clark - who led 19-13 with two ends to play before dropping a single then a five to draw 19-19.
