MARTHA CALTON-SEAL led the way as City of York Athletic club enjoyed a successful weekend of cross country action.

She was a dominant winner of the under-17 women’s race in round three of the West Yorkshire League at Thornes Park, Wakefield.

Coming home more than 100 metres clear of runner-up Bethan Morley (Ilkley), she completed the 4.3km course in 15 minutes 17 seconds and helped her club finish second in the team competition.

City of York’s Toby Antcliff finished a strong second in the U17 men’s event, only falling behind to a determined run for home in the last half mile from Halifax’s Harry Johnson.

Antcliff clocked 19-18 to Johnson’s 19-04 for the 5.75 kilometre course.

Led home by Joe O’Brien in eighth place, City of York’s U15 boys' team won their event while the U13 girls' and U11 boys' sides both came third.

Individually, there were top-10 finishes for Lottie Langan (sixth) and Frances Hogg (10th) in the U13 girls and Laura Brooks (fourth) in the U11 girls, plus Miles Watson (seventh) and Benjamin Scurrah-Smyth (10th) in the U11 boys.

There was plenty more success in the senior ranks where top-20 finishes from James Tucker (13th) and Jake Hooley (18th) led City of York to second in the men’s team competition.

The pair completed the 10km course in 33-32 and 34-08 respectively, placing second and third in the U20 standings.

Good packing once again from George Phillips (25th), Danny Figg (26th), Harry Topham (29th) and Pete Ellis (42nd) ensured second place ahead of Holmfirth as Wakefield took victory.

In the senior women’s race, City of York’s Charlotte Mason was only six seconds behind the winner, Homfirth’s Ruby Sykes, in taking fourth place.

A great battle over the 5.75km course saw Sykes (20-34) head York Knavesmire Harriers pair Becky Penty (20-35) and Nik Tarrega (20-39), with Mason clocking 20-40.

City of York’s Georgia Rothwell (22.26) finished 10th and first U20.

Knavesmire topped the team standings, with York in ninth.

With racing also taking place in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League at Stockton, more than 50 club members were in cross country action.

In the boys’ U11 race at Stockton, York’s Daniel Campbell won and William Keens was fourth. Campbell currently leads the league and Keens is third.

In the equivalent girls’ race, Martha Sigsworth finished second, and Molly Skelton ninth.

City of York’s Dave Paver was third in the over-65 men’s race, which is run separately at the NYSD league, and is second in the standings.
