SELBY Town moved up to fifth in Northern Counties East League division one with a 1-0 win at home to Swallownest.

A 50th-minute Carl Stewart penalty was enough to give the Robins their third win on the bounce, with the added extra of it being their first clean sheet since August 18.

While Selby were generally dominant throughout, it is fair to say their attacking play did not match the levels of Saturday's 3-2 win at East Yorkshire Carnegie.

The defence, however, looked rock solid, and keeper Pete Lawrie was not troubled by a serious shot all game.

Selby began the game in the ascendancy, with Stewart having an early shot when a ball was cleared to him from a corner, although Swallownest's defence put up a stubborn resistance and Town could not quite find the right pass to unlock it.

Inevitably, Swallownest worked their way into the game, building up some pressure and getting in behind only to have the cross blocked and a good chance go just wide.

The best passing move of the match then saw Jordan Snodin played in but the Selby man was thwarted by a fine save from visiting keeper Josh Lill.

Good chances were proving hard to come by, with Selby generally not able to find the right pass at the right time and the forwards straying offside, Liam Flanagan being one culprit after having had the ball in the net.

Joe Dale came on just before half-time to replace the injured Sam Cable and had almost an immediate impact, with his first touch playing in Flanagan who could not find the shot he wanted and left the keeper with an easy save.

And the flag again was raised as Stewart playing in Dale to unselfishly pass to Flanagan as he cut inside.

The Robins began the second on the front foot with Dale dragging a shot wide before being awarded a penalty for a handball. Stewart calmly dispatched, sending the keeper the wrong way.

As Selby pressed, Flanagan had a couple of chances without troubling the Swallownest keeper and Dale had the ball in the net only to be denied by yet another offside flag.

Selby hearts were in mouths as, just before the end, Swallownest won a free kick just outside the penalty area, but the effort went wide.
