CITY of York Hockey Club Men I dropped to ninth in North League premier division following 5-3 defeat at Wakefield.

The table-toppers inflicted a second defeat in as many weeks on City, who had pulled themselves level from a two-goal deficit.

Wakefield started early and capitalised on mistakes at the back to take a quick lead, which was soon doubled soon from a short corner.

The scoreline did not reflect the game as a whole and York were soon back in contention as a lazy run and reverse from Peter Fitton sent the ball crashing into the corner.

York put the pressure on in the second half and soon got their reward as Tom Feasby netted for the second week running to draw York level.

But the visitors found themselves exposed at the back twice in quick succession and Wakefield began to draw away.

Luke Ramli hit back again for City, slotting in from the ‘D’, but Wakefield scored on the break to put the game to bed.

York next host fellow promoted side Lindum.

City of York II maintained their 100 per cent home record with a 7-1 thrashing of Wakefield II.

The hosts kept themselves fourth in Yorkshire League premier division, ahead of the chasing pack on goal difference.

The visitors took the lead inside the first minute from a penalty corner, but City dominated from there on in.

James Fitton netted the equaliser on five minutes after Dan Ellwood was allowed to run into the ‘D’ and play across the face of goal for the skipper to tap in.

Wakefield started to pick up cards as they lost their discipline, and were punished by City.

Jack Bass netted his first goal for City before Dan Hyden got in on the act after a great ball from Pete Bennett. Ellwood added a fourth before the break from a penalty corner.

A contentious second half saw City ease another three goals past the visitors, with Fitton, Hyden and Ellwood each netting their second goals of the game.

At the other end, any Wakefield attacks were snuffed out by a defence led by man-of-the-match David Clamp.

Next week, City travel to fifth-placed Lindum II.
