YORK Indoor Bowls Club eased past Scarborough 122-63 in the Denny Cup.

All four rinks won for York, who will face Hornsea in the next round in a fortnight’s time.

At home, Kieran Earnshaw, Mick Cooney, Craig Newton and Tony Horobin led 15-0 before their opponents picked up a single on the sixth end.

But thoughts of a comeback were short-lived as the home side won three of the following four ends on their way to a 31-9 victory.

Malcolm Lewars, Jeff Normanton, John Whiteley and Phil Emmerson led 11-7 after eight ends before a purple patch which yielded 21 shots, including a maximum eight, over six ends to lead 31-7 on their way to a 41-12 success.

In Scarborough, John Crowe, Jack Woodworth, Mark Clarke and Dave Stroughair found themselves 14-10 down with eight ends to play after having been 10-7 ahead, but they finished well and took their game 22-16.

Neal Macdonald, Graham Brooke, Jack Bird and Scott Walton started well, leading 12-0 after only four ends before the home side hit back to go 20-16 up with eight ends left.

A run of five winning ends out of the following six looked to have done enough for Walton’s team as they led 27-22 with three to play before a single and a three saw Scarborough take the game 28-26.

York Vikings Over-55s won their second game in eight days, beating Leeds 88-58 in the Yorkshire O55s League division one.

The away leg saw Ken Griffiths, Alan Hampshire, Dave Dale and John Whiteley coming from 12-12 to 19-12 before winning 23-18.

Graham Instone, Trevor Wilford, Graham Brooke and Jeff Normanton went down 27-14 after having led 10-2.

At home, York wiped out the eight-shot deficit after only six ends as Alan Vowles, Mick Cooney, Malcolm Lewars and Tony Horobin led 7-2 and Gordon Fennell, Malcolm Harrison, Roger Ford and Phil Parsons led 5-2.

Horobin`s team dominated throughout and finished winning 32-4 while Parsons won all but two of the last 11 ends to go from 7-7 to win 19-9.

Tomorrow, York play the England Bowls Tourists in a challenge match, starting at 1pm.

On Saturday, Thanet Road hosts the Liberty Trophy game between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire starting at noon.

On Sunday, York play Hornsea in the Egham Trophy. The game starts at noon.

In division two, both York Knights and York Romans were disappointed as they won two rinks but lost the aggregate, with both being defeated 10-4 on points.

The Knights were faced with a big deficit after the away teams lost in Scarborough. Charlie Arnett, Norman Ellis, Pete Bradley and Jim Robertson went down 26-7 while Wally Darbyshire, John Walton, Ray Calpin and Malcolm Thompson lost 24-15.

At home, Harley Wenham, Dave Berwick, David White and Geoff Walker gave the Knights hope of overturning the deficit, leading 20-2 after 10 ends, but the away team pulled back and the game eventually finished 28-16.

Allen Clapham, Ken Robinson, Dave Preece and Ray Clark were trailing for much of their game, but came through at the finish to win two of the last three ends, picking up three shots while only dropping one to win 17-16.

The Romans’ away leg saw one rink win and one lose at Doncaster.

Andy Lockwood, Mal Rankeillor, Dave Dearlove and Trevor Scott were trailing 14-12 before winning four on the trot to lead 18-14, before dropping a single and a two to hold on to pick up a valuable two points.

Doug Mitchell, Alan Braithwaite, Alan Yoward and Allan May dropped 12 shots over four ends to go from 10-7 down to 22-8 which took the game away from them. They finished 25-14.

At home, Pete Waring, Ray Wynn, Dave Clarke and Mike Snowden trailed 18-11 with six ends to play and made a great comeback as they won all of them to take their game 22-18.

Colin Robinson, John Sandle, Bill Carter and Ron Munro had done well to come from 15-3 to 16-16 but could not keep it going, eventually going down 29-17.
