YORK City Knights have made a major addition to their 2019 squad with the signing of centre Liam Salter from Hull KR.

A graduate of Rovers' academy and a mainstay at the Super League club since his first-team debut in 2012, Salter has matured into a dependable top-flight player, making 121 appearances for the Robins.

Noted for his strong defence, the former Myton Warriors junior has worked hard on his attacking game since coming through the ranks and is equally able to play at centre or in the second row. At 25 years of age he arguably has his best years ahead of him.

Knights head coach James Ford said: “I’m delighted to bring a person and player of Liam’s calibre to the club. I’m confident Liam will be a huge influence on our younger players, both on and off the field.

“Liam will add strike to our edges and carries plenty of intensity in his contact. We’ll be looking to Liam to facilitate an increase in standards during our preparation, which will positively influence our performances."

Ford, like he has done with other signings, reiterated that the increasing backing on the terraces, plus the fundraising by Squadbuilder, had helped the facilitate such a signing.

“The amazing support we’ve received throughout last season and the beginning of this has enabled us to pull off this signing - I would just like to thank the Squadbuilder for helping the club get this deal over the line," he said.

“The contribution from the fans makes a huge difference in helping to bring players of Liam’s calibre to the club. It is massively appreciated.”

Salter said: “I’m really pleased to have signed for York. The facilities here are absolutely fantastic, and James and Jon (Flatman, chairman) really sold the well respected culture and environment of the club to me.

“They’re putting together a squad capable of competing well in a very strong league and I’m excited to be a part of that.

“I watched a few Knights games last season and the fans were absolutely fantastic. I’m really looking forward to running out in front of them at Bootham Crescent and eventually the new stadium next year - I can’t wait to get started."
