BOXERS from York's Legions Gym have brought home gold and silver from the Esker Boxcup in Ireland.
Youngster Paris Smith won her final against the Irish national champion, while 21-year-old Sophie Sellers lost her last fight on a points decision.
The pair are in action again next month, fighting at the club's home show at Acomb WMC on November 23, where Sellers will take on a white-collar champion while Esker champ Smith will face last year’s England Boxing national champ.
Smith, a 12-year-old pupil at Archbishop Holgate's CE Academy received a bye to the fight against Katie Byrne, whose corner threw in the towel after one minute and 15 seconds of the first round.
Sellers, meanwhile, won by a points decision in the semi-final against the Ulster champion before losing on a points decision in the final. She was also named runner-up for the 'best intermediate' award.
Head coach of Legions Boxing Club, Ash Martin, said: "Both girls did the club incredibly proud, fighting their hearts out in our first international tournament and bringing home a gold and silver medal.
"Sophie lost on a points decision in a very hard-fought bout against a very skilled and tough opponent. Leaving with a silver medal she did herself, the coaches, and the club proud."
The competition in Lucan, County Dublin describes itself as "the world's most prestigious female-only boxcup". Now in its sixth year, this edition of the event welcomed 136 fighters.
